Země-Město

Země-Město on a Garmin watch
Země-Město
Device app

Země-Město is a cheat sheet and game buddy for the pencil-and-paper word game known as Categories, Stadt-Land-Fluss or Le Petit Bac: pick a letter and the watch shows words for country, city, river and nine more categories. Plus a coach that asks the questions and a game round with a letter draw and a countdown — no phone, no internet. The app comes in ten language editions — pick yours below.

Ten language editions

The app is in the Connect IQ Store ten times over. Each edition has its own words, its own icon and the name the game goes by in that country — the app itself speaks that language. Czech is the original; the other nine have not been proofread by a native speaker yet, so if you spot a word that does not belong, write to prezek@seznam.cz and I will fix it.

Země-Město – category list with the first answerZemě-Město – coach with revealed answersZemě-Město – game round running

Země-Město (Country-City) is the classic Czech pencil-and-paper word game: a letter is drawn and everyone races to write a country, a city, a river and more starting with it. Země-Město keeps the answers on your wrist — over 1,500 Czech words for 12 categories. The same game is played all over Europe under its own name — Stadt-Land-Fluss, Le Petit Bac, Tutti Frutti — and every language has its own edition with its own words. And the watch can run the game too: the coach asks on its own, and a game round draws the letter and keeps time.

A CHEAT SHEET FOR EVERY LETTER

  • Pick a letter and the watch shows words for 12 categories: country, city, river, colour, name, animal, currency, food, brand, singer, thing and musical instrument
  • A category list with the first answer, or a full-screen card with 3, 5 or 6 words
  • In the Czech edition over 1,500 words for 30 letters including Č, Ř, Š and Ž

COACH

  • The watch draws a letter and a category and asks you
  • START reveals the answers, UP means „I got it“
  • Keeps score — it only asks about categories it has answers for

PLAY WITH FRIENDS

  • The watch draws a letter and never repeats it within a game
  • Round countdown from 0:10 to 5:00, vibration at the end
  • After the round it shows the answers to check against

ON YOUR WRIST, NO PHONE

  • Everything runs on the watch — no internet, no account
  • Buttons and touch; pick a letter along two grid axes or tap it
  • 130 Garmin watches: fēnix, epix, Forerunner, Venu, vívoactive, Instinct and more. Each edition speaks its own language, so pick the one you play in

1What Země-Město does

A letter is drawn, the clock is running and you still need a river starting with K. Země-Město is a cheat sheet and game companion for the classic pencil-and-paper word game — right on your watch.

Pick a letter and the watch shows words for all 12 categories: Země (country), Město (city), Řeka (river), Barva (colour), Jméno (first name), Zvíře (animal), Měna (currency), Jídlo (food), Značka (brand), Zpěvák (singer), Věc (thing) and Hudební nástroj (musical instrument). The app holds 1,581 words for 30 letters — A to Z including Q, W, X and Y, plus Č, Ř, Š and Ž.

There are three modes:

  • Tahák (cheat sheet) — pick a letter and browse the answers,
  • Trenér (coach) — the watch asks for a letter and a category, you answer and it keeps score,
  • Hra (game) — the watch draws a letter, counts down the round, vibrates at the end and then shows the answers.

It works without a phone and without internet.

„Země-Město“ means „Country-City“ — the Czech name for the game played across Europe as Stadt-Land-Fluss, Le Petit Bac or Tutti Frutti. The app comes in ten language editions, each its own app in the Store with its own words; this guide is written from the Czech one and translates what you see on screen.

Category card with answers
Category card: the letter, the category and several words.

2Install & launch

  1. On your phone, open the Connect IQ Store app and search for „Země-Město“.
  2. Install it to your watch.
  3. On the watch, open the app list and start Země-Město. If you use it often, add it to your favourites.

On first launch the Tahák mode is active and you see the letter grid. There is nothing to set up and no account to create.

3Quick start

  1. Start the app — the letter grid appears.
  2. Move to a letter with the buttons (DOWN = next row, UP = next letter in the row) and press START. On touch watches just tap the letter.
  3. The category list appears with the first answer for each category. START opens the card of the selected category with more words.
  4. BACK takes you one step back; from the grid it closes the app.

To switch modes, open the settings: hold MENU (a long press of UP on most watches); on watches without a MENU button, hold your finger on the screen. Then Režim (mode) → Tahák, Trenér or Hra.

4The letter grid

All 30 letters fit on one screen in six rows that follow the round display. You move along two axes, so you never click through the whole alphabet:

  • DOWN — one row down (from the last row back to the first),
  • UP — next letter in the row (from the end back to the start),
  • START — open the selected letter.

The active row has an outline around it and the selected letter sits in an orange circle. On touch watches, tap the letter itself and it opens straight away.

Grey letters (Q and X) have words in only 5 categories. You can open them as usual; Coach and Game just never draw them.

A dot under a letter means you have already opened it since the app started. The dots are cleared when you close the app.

Letter grid
Grid: the outline marks the active row, dots mark letters you have opened.

5Cheat sheet: list & card

After picking a letter you get one of two views. Which one is set by Zobrazení (view) in the settings; the list is the default.

Category list
List: 12 categories, each with its first answer.
Category card
Card: one category across the whole screen.
Empty category
A category with no word for this letter.

Category list

At the top is the letter and the title TAHÁK, below it four rows: the category on the left and its first answer on the right. UP/DOWN moves the selection, and the arc on the right shows where you are in the list. If a category has no word, a dash stands in for the answer. START (or a tap) opens the card of the highlighted category, starting with exactly the word you saw in the list. The list is the fastest overview: you see at once which column on your paper is still empty.

Category card

The letter in a circle at the top, then the category name and its position (e.g. 1/12), and the words below the line. How many words the card shows is set by Odpovědí (answers): 3, 5 or 6.

  • DOWN / UP — next / previous category (wrapping through all 12),
  • START or a tap — the next set of words from the same category,
  • BACK — back to where you opened the card from (list, grid or end of round).

Words start from a random position each time, so every visit shows a slightly different selection. When a category has nothing for the letter, the card says „na tohle písmeno nic není“ (nothing for this letter).

6Coach mode

Coach asks
Question: a letter and a category, answer hidden.
Coach reveals answers
Revealed: up to three answers, score at the top.

The cheat sheet turned around. The watch draws both a letter and a category — say „K, ŘEKA“ (river) — and you try to answer yourself, out loud or in your head.

  1. START (or a tap) reveals up to three answers the app knows.
  2. If you had an answer, press UP = guessed it. On touch watches without UP/DOWN buttons, swipe down.
  3. If not, press START to move on without a point.

The score at the top shows guessed / revealed questions (e.g. 7/10). DOWN skips a question — as long as you haven’t revealed it, it doesn’t count.

Every question comes with a new letter, and the same letter never comes up twice in a row. Only letters with words in at least 6 categories are drawn (all except Q and X), and only categories for which the app knows a word. BACK closes the app, which resets the score.

7Game mode

Round in progress
Round running: letter in the middle, shrinking ring and time left.
Round over
ČAS! (time’s up) — the watch vibrates and offers the answers.

In Game mode the watch is the referee: it draws the letter and keeps time. You play as usual with pencil and paper — one watch is enough for the whole group.

How to play

  1. Everyone prepares a sheet with columns Země, Město, Řeka… — which categories you play is up to you.
  2. On the start screen (KOLO 1 = round 1, a question mark) press START. The watch draws a letter and starts the countdown right away.
Want to choose the letter yourselves? Press DOWN (on touch watches without buttons, swipe up) to open the grid; the letter you pick starts the round.
  3. Everyone writes. The ring around the edge shrinks and the time left is shown under the letter. If everyone is done early, START ends the round.
  4. When time runs out, the watch vibrates twice and ČAS! appears at the top.
  5. START shows the answers for the drawn letter — as a list or a card, depending on your settings. Handy for settling disputed words. BACK returns to the game.
  6. DOWN prepares the next round.

Set the round length with Délka kola (round length): 0:10 to 5:00, default 1:30. Letters don’t repeat within one game; Q and X are never drawn. Once every letter has been used, the draw starts over. The round counter and used letters reset when you close the app or switch modes.

Vibration follows the watch’s own setting — if vibration is turned off system-wide, the app won’t turn it on.

8Settings

Settings on the watch
Settings (Nastavení) on the watch.
Mode selection
Mode (Režim): the active one is labelled „zapnuto“ (on).

On the watch, the settings open from any screen of the app: hold MENU (a long press of UP on most watches). Venu 4, Venu X1, vívoactive 3 and vívoactive 6 have no MENU button — there, hold your finger on the screen.

On the phone

The same settings are in the Connect IQ app on your phone: Země-Město → Settings. The round length has two number fields there — minutes (0–5) and seconds (0–59); the result is always kept between 0:10 and 5:00. If you change the mode on the phone while the app is running, the watch switches to the new mode right away.

Hold MENU = settings (works everywhere). Note: in Game mode BACK closes the app even mid-round — use MENU to visit the settings; the round clock keeps running meanwhile.

Touch watches

On watches with a touchscreen:

  • tap = START; in the grid it opens the letter you tap,
  • swipe up = DOWN, swipe down = UP,
  • swipe right = BACK,
  • hold = settings.

Watches without UP and DOWN buttons (Venu, vívoactive, Venu Sq, Approach S50/S62/S70, D2 Air and others) show touch hints instead — for example „ŤUKNI = ODHALIT“ (tap = reveal) or „TÁHNI DOLŮ = UHODL“ (swipe down = guessed) rather than „UP = UHODL JSEM“.

Instinct

Instinct 2, 2S, 2X, Crossover, 3 Solar and E, as well as Descent G1, have a black-and-white display with a round window in the top right. The app puts status into that window: the selected letter in the grid and list, the category position on the card, the score in Coach and the time left during a round. The list shows three rows instead of four, and with only two colours the grey letters look the same as the rest.

10Supported watches

11Tips & FAQ

Why are some letters grey?

Q and X have words in only 5 of the 12 categories. You can open them in Tahák, but Coach and Game never draw them — a round where half the columns stay empty would be no fun.

Why is a category empty?

For some letters the app knows no word in a given category. For Ř, for example, it has no colour, animal, currency, brand, singer or musical instrument. The list then shows a dash instead of an answer and the card says „na tohle písmeno nic není“. Coach never asks about empty categories.

Does a word starting with Ú count for U?

Yes. Vowel length doesn’t matter: words starting with Á are under A, with Ú or Ů under U, and so on. Č, Ř, Š and Ž, on the other hand, are letters of their own with their own place in the grid. For singers, the app stores the part of the name that really starts with the letter — Karel Gott is under K, Gott under G.

How do I see more words?

Press START on the card to get the next set from the same category. Change how many words the card shows in the settings (Odpovědí 3, 5 or 6).

Does the round pause when I open the settings?

No. The round follows the clock, so when you come back from the settings the time left is correct. BACK in Game mode, however, closes the app.

Why doesn’t the watch vibrate at the end of a round?

Most likely vibration is turned off in the watch’s settings. The app respects that.

Which language does the app speak?

The one its edition is written in — each edition is a separate app in the Store (Země-Město, Mestá-Štáty, Stadt-Land-Fluss, Categories, Państwa-Miasta, Le Petit Bac, Nomi Cose Città, Stad Land Rivier, İsim Şehir Hayvan, Tutti Frutti) and keeps that language even on a watch set to another one. Install the edition you play in; the links are on the app’s page.

A word looks wrong in my language

Quite possible. Czech is the original set; the other nine were written without a native speaker reading them. Write to prezek@seznam.cz and I will fix it.

Where is my data?

On the watch, and nowhere else. Země-Město requests no permissions, never connects to the internet and needs no account. The words are stored inside the app.

Found a disputed or missing word?

Use „Contact Developer“ on the app’s page in the Connect IQ Store.
